Ojai Community Bank Shred Day

Ojai, California, September 1, 2009 — We all accumulate paper, sometimes by the ton – everything from old tax returns to legal documents and credit card statements. And most of us wonder, after a few years, how to get rid of it. Ojai Community Bank has a “green” answer.

Along with the Ojai Valley Directory, the bank for the last four years has sponsored a semi-annual “Shred Day” where anyone may have unwanted papers safely and securely ground into confetti and carted off for recycling, all free of charge.

The shredding takes place in the bank’s parking lot near downtown Ojai, where ”shredees” drive up, flip their trunks or tailgates, and a team of bank employees (along with Ren and Victoria Adam of the Ojai Valley Director) empty the contents and cart it to a waiting shredding vehicle.

To add zest, the Bank includes a “shredder raffle,” with a $100 prize to the lucky shredee – this year it was Gay Martin and Pat Cluchey, owners of the Garden Terrace Restaurant (pictured here accepting their raffle winnings from Judy Gabriel of Ojai Community Bank).

Our last Shred Day in April was a huge success, with more than four and a half tons of paper collected and recycled, saving an estimated 76 trees, 1,700 gallons of oil, 4,000 kilowatts of electricity and 7,000 gallons of water that would otherwise have been consumed in creating that much new paper product.

“You can watch your old documents as they’re fed into the shredder truck right on site, so nobody can see or copy them,” says Mary Floyd, who organized this year’s event. “If you toss these items into your everyday trash, you are really risking identity theft.”

The next Shred Day will be Saturday, Sept. 18.

Keep your eyes open also for E-Waste Day in January, when we’ll offer an environmentally safe and sound way to dispose of those old printers, computers or copiers collecting dust around your home or office. Just bring ‘em to 402 W. Ojai Avenue. We’ll do the rest.

Ojai Community Bank is a publicly traded company, traded under the symbol OJCB on the Over the Counter Bulletin Board (www.otcbb.com). Located at 402 W. Ojai Avenue, the Bank was created from a locally generated capital offering, and is primarily owned by Ojai Valley investors. Member FDIC.
