July 1 –July 31- Ojai Artist in the Lobby – Magui Suñer
I have been painting only for about 8 years, although it is something that I wanted to do all of my life. My career as Professor of Linguistics at Cornell for 31 years, teaching, researching and publishing while raising a family, left no time to fulfill my dream. During one of my sabbaticals I decided to try painting to find out whether I would really like it. I loved it tremendously and have been painting ever since. Although my preferred medium is oil, I have also worked with egg tempera, encaustic, digital transfer, gouache and pastels.
I have taken painting and drawing courses in Ithaca, NY at the Community School of Music and Art with Virginia Cobey and Bill Benson, and at the Cornell University Arts Department: Drawing I (Stan Taft), Painting I (Carl Ostendarp), Painting II (thrice with Stan Taft), and Painting III (Xiowens Chen).

October 18 - Ojai Artist in the Lobby - Texana
“Texana paints the People of the World, as they are, where they are, amidst tribal and ethnic groups whose cultures are vanishing. The world is Texana’s studio, and her easel is the global community meeting place, where race, nationality, religion, & status are transcended in this communion of the human spirit.”
Texana, painter of People of the World, was born Mary Burger in Abilene, Texas in 1916. Texana was known in over 100 countries as the "People's Painter," and was thought of as a goodwill ambassador with a paintbrush. Texana's efforts to foster world peace and understanding through the international language of art were recognized in 1977 with a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. For over four decades, she traveled to the remotest corners of the globe accompanied only by her "moving studio." Texana painted people in their daily rural settings, “as they are, where they are." She sought to capture their faces before they were erased into oblivion "by the onset of encroaching 'civilization.' " Thus, her wanderings began to create a living history of world cultures & the human spirit. In Texana's words, "Art is the communication, the universal language of mankind...We learn to love one another and people are no more alien strangers."
